Thekkayil Family
Throughout history Ayurveda has been practiced in India. One of the oldest families who practice it is the Thekkayil family, living in Calicut (Kerala), who over the years have produced many brilliant ayurvedic physicians. There is no doubt that the steps that this family has taken, and are still taking, in the field of Ayurveda are of immense value and everlasting benefit to the people.

The original records have been lost, but it is believed that the Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home was founded between 1875/ 1880 by the late Sri. Thekkayil Achuthan Vaidyar, acknowledged to be one of the greatest ayurvedic physicians of all time, and by the late Sri. Kaviraj T. P. Vaidyar, a ‘Kaviraj’ from Bengal, who was an outstanding Sanskrit and Vedic scholar from the Thekkayil family and a famous ayurvedic physician of his period.

The present Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing home in Calicut was founded in 1974 by Thekkayil Rajaratnam Vydiar who in 2009 was honoured by the Corporation of Calicut with the award of Bhishak Ratna for his eminence in ayurvedic medical practice. Many patients who have had unsuccessful treatment by physicians who do not practice Ayurveda have been cured by this great physician and brought back to a normal life. This family tradition is continuing to flourish, and thanks to the encouragement and blessings of his father, Dr.Sanand Ratnam Thekkayil the latest member of this famous family to take up Ayurveda, is now an ayurvedic doctor in his own right.
